You didn’t seek membership in this club, but here you find yourself. You’ve been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer (or “MBC” for short) and you join an estimated 250K others trying to navigate this unexpected path. As a fellow member, I created this resource in hopesĀ of helping to guide others with things I’ve learned along the way.
The metastatic breast cancer diagnosis will be with you for the rest of your life. And there’s no telling how long the rest of your life will be. It’s hard to wrap your brain around that fact and really embrace living life in the moment. I’m still a work in progress on that.
There are a plethora of powerful medicines that your doctor can prescribe to manage the disease and help improve your quality of life. They all different degrees of side effects and your mileage will vary on which side effects you will experience and to what severity. Everyone seems to be a little different. At some point, the cancer will progress and you’ll have to switch to a new line of treatment and learn the ins and outs of the side effects of the new medications. Fortunately, they are also continually developing new drugs to throw at the disease.
Along the way there are constant tests, scans, and doctor appointments. And plenty of anxiety. And there will be lots of questions. On that last one, I hope this site serves as a useful resource for others with the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) diagnosis.
For me, the ocean is a good metaphor for this disease. The waves never stop, with some big and some small. There will be a mixture of rough seas and tranquil calmness. And through it all, keep your head up.
